Dhow sailing over a turquoise lagoon along the Zanzibar coast

Illustrative Private Journey · Zanzibar · 7 Nights

Zanzibar & the Swahili Coast

Island seclusion and ancient stone: seven private nights between Stone Town's lanes and a quiet villa on the Indian Ocean.

The journey at a glance

Two chapters of the island: the history of Stone Town, walked early with a local historian, then five unhurried nights on the northeast coast with your own staff, the reef and a sandbank of your own. A natural close to a Kenya or Tanzania safari, or a retreat on its own.

Every journey is designed around your dates, pace, interests and preferred style of travel. This itinerary is a starting point, not a fixed package.

Chapter 1 · Stone Town · 2 nights

Stone Town: Ancient Stone

A UNESCO-listed old town of coral-stone lanes, carved doors and centuries of Swahili, Omani and Indian Ocean history.

  1. Carved wooden Swahili door in a Stone Town alley

    Day 1

    Arrival in the old town

Met on arrival, whether from a Mara or Serengeti airstrip or an international flight, and driven to a restored heritage house. An evening walk to the waterfront as the town comes alive.

  2. Traditional dhow sailing at sunset off Zanzibar

    Day 2

Spice, history and a dhow at dusk

An early walk through the lanes with a local historian before the heat, then a private spice-farm visit. In the evening, a traditional dhow sails out for sunset.

Chapter 2 · Northeast Coast · 5 nights

The Coast: Island Seclusion

A private villa or small, quiet retreat on the northeast coast, with its own staff and chef, and the reef just offshore.

  1. Private villa terrace and pool overlooking the Indian Ocean

    Day 3

To the quiet side of the island

A private drive to the coast. The rest of the day is simply yours: the pool, the beach and a lunch prepared to your preferences.

  2. Lunch table set on a white sandbank in turquoise water

    Day 4

    A sandbank of your own

A private boat out towards the Mnemba Atoll for snorkelling on the reef, followed by lunch on a sandbank as the tide allows.

  3. Dhow sailing over a turquoise lagoon along the Zanzibar coast

    Day 5

    The unhurried day

Nothing planned. A massage on the terrace, a walk at low tide, or a cooking lesson with your chef in Swahili coastal cuisine.

  4. Zanzibar red colobus monkey in Jozani Forest

    Day 6

    The forest and the village

A guided walk in Jozani Forest to see the rare Zanzibar red colobus, then time in a nearby village with a local host.

  5. Dhow silhouetted against a Zanzibar sunset

    Day 7

    Last light by the sea

A slow final day, closing with a Swahili seafood dinner by the water. Your Journey Manager confirms every detail of tomorrow's departure.

  6. Morning light over a villa terrace on the coast

    Day 8

    Farewell to the coast

Breakfast by the sea, then a private transfer to the airport for your onward flight, or a short hop to Pemba or the Kenyan coast.
